From the first pages of our Holy Bible, we read the story of Creation. God created people in the divine image, a reflection of the beautiful and mysterious diversity within the One God. I remember reflecting with my father on these verses. When I was young, he had heart surgery. In the hospital, he decided to read the Bible. Starting from the very first chapter, he was surprised at what he read: There appeared to be signs of the Trinity in Genesis!
This past Sunday was recognized as Trinity Sunday in many churches around the world. In the church, we express our faith in God as Trinity, or Three in One: Heavenly Parent, Christ, and Holy Spirit. Language around the Trinity can be particularly confusing, even for pastors and theologians who have spent years in study. I find this video from Bible Project helpful to offer some insights on God’s Triune nature: https://youtu.be/eAvYmE2YYIU
Genesis 1:26-27 (NRSV)
26 Then God said, “Let us make humankind[a] in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth,[b] and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.”
27 So God created humankind[c] in his image,
in the image of God he created them;[d]
male and female he created them.
Questions for reflection: How is God’s image reflected in me? How do I see the image of God in those around me? Today’s icon is The Trinity by Kelly Latimore; how does this image challenge our own image of God?
