July 14, 2020: For Equilibrium, a Blessing

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven…

Ecclesiastes 3:1

I used to live in Australia and after one long flight back to California, I got the worst case of vertigo. The equilibrium in my ears was completely thrown off, and whenever I stood up I got so dizzy that I would fall down. It’s an awful feeling to feel thrown off and out of control. There is something to be said about having balance in one’s life and finding equilibrium, especially in our world today where everyone is feeling thrown off with this pandemic and divisive politics. May we find safety and security, balance, and groundedness in the depths of God’s comforting presence.

For Equilibrium, a Blessing

Like the joy of the sea coming home to shore,
May the relief of laughter rinse through your soul.
As the wind loves to call things to dance,
May your gravity be lightened by grace.
Like the dignity of moonlight restoring the earth,
May your thoughts incline with reverence and respect.
As water takes whatever shape it is in,
So free may you be about who you become.
As silence smiles on the other side of what’s said,
May your sense of irony bring perspective.
As time remains free of all that it frames,
May your mind stay clear of all it names.
May your prayer of listening deepen enough
to hear in the depths the laughter of God.
