When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12
“You are the light that gives light to the world. A city that is built on a hill cannot be hidden. And people don’t hide a light under a bowl. They put it on a lampstand so the light shines for all the people in the house. In the same way, you should be a light for other people. Live so that they will see the good things you do and will praise your Parent in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16
I am the light; you are the light. These are Jesus’ words to his followers. Jesus is the light that illumines our pathway, brightens our life, keeps us alert, and inspires us by faith. But the beauty of the gospel is that all of these wonderful things about Jesus can be true about us, too. As followers of Jesus, we have the light of life. And that light isn’t meant to be kept to ourselves. We can’t hide it away! We give light, the same light we have received from Christ, when we love as God first loved us. When we pray for a friend. When we encourage one another in our faith. When we advocate and care for the marginalized in our congregation and community.
Take a moment to reflect on the past few weeks or months. Ask yourself “Who has been the light to me?” Give thanks to God for the light in them. Take another moment to ask yourself “When have I been the light?” Give thanks to God for the light in you as well.
Jesus is the light. I am the light. You are the light. We are the light.
