Centering Prayer for New Year Worship God’s light has come into the world in a manger in Bethlehem. May the light of our faith in God shine in all we do. The One who is our hope has arrived; The One who is our life has come to us; The One who is our joy is here with us. God of Christmas wonder and mystery, you came to us as a baby to hold us in your grace. You came to us in a stable so we would have no trouble finding you; You came to us in poverty to enrich our lives. You alone are worthy of worship. Fill our hearts with yourself and receive our grateful praise. Amen.
Two Songs
Psalm 139:1-14, 23-24 O LORD, You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; You understand my thought from afar. You scrutinize my path and my lying down, And are intimately acquainted with all my ways. Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O LORD, You know it all. You have enclosed me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is too high, I cannot attain to it. Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, Even there Your hand will lead me, And Your right hand will lay hold of me. If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, And the light around me will be night,” Even the darkness is not dark to You, And the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You. For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well . . . . Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way.
Prayer for the New Year – adapted from Joyce Rupp, OSM – May there be harmony in all your relationships. May sharp words, envious thoughts, and hostile feelings be dissolved. – May you give and receive love generously. May this love echo in your heart like the joy of church bells on a clear winter day. – May each person that comes into your life be greeted like another Christ. May the honor given the Babe in Bethlehem be that which you extend to every guest in your presence. – May the wonder and awe that fills the eyes of children be awakened within you. May it lead to you renewed awareness and appreciation of whatever you easily take for granted. – May the bonds of love for one another be strengthened as you gather with your family and friends around the table of festive gatherings and nourishment. – May you daily open the gift of your life and be grateful for the hidden treasures it contains. – May the coming year be one of good health for you. May you have energy and vitality. May you care well for your body, mind, and spirit. – May you keep your eye on God’s Spirit within you and trust this Luminescent Presence to guide and direct you each day. – May you go often to the Bethlehem in your heart and visit the One who offers you peace. May you bring this peace into the world. Amen.
