#7: “How Many Candies Can You Buy?” Signed Lithograph
A signed giclee print on acid free watercolor paper, 8 1/4″ x 16″ image area. (No mat or frame). This illustration from the children’s picture book, “What is Math?”, makes math fun and easy to understand. It tackles concepts like symmetry, patterns, counting, calendars, weights, fractions, shapes, distances, and even charting and graphing. Math, in this context, is portrayed as a tool we use to understand and represent our world – it’s in the changing seasons, ticking clocks, recipe measurements, and classroom lessons. The book’s sentences are simple, and this simplicity gave me the chance to play around with different types of illustrations. Now, math can be a bit abstract, which makes it a bit tricky to illustrate. But I took on this challenge by filling the book with fun and imaginative scenes related to children’s daily lives.. This way, readers can easily relate to the math concepts being introduced.
Starting Bid: $125 Donated by: Sachiko Yoshikawa
#8: “Yakuzen (Herbal Cuisine)” Signed Lithograph
A signed giclee printed image on acid free watercolor paper, 7 3/4″ x 6″ image area. (No mat or frame.) “Since the start of the coronavirus outbreak, opportunities for dining out have significantly decreased, and there has been an increase in cooking at home. While I had always enjoyed cooking to some extent, I found reading small print in recipe books to be a chore, and so I had never really been passionate about it. However, since I started watching cooking channels on YouTube during the pandemic, I have been completely captivated by the numerous simple, delicious, and healthy recipes that are available. Over the past five years, various health issues have also arisen for my family, including myself, and so I have started to research the nutritional value and benefits of ingredients, which constantly leaves me amazed at the depth of knowledge involved. I have even purchased several medicinal cooking books, including those on traditional Chinese medicine and macrobiotics. I used to be a fan of Korean royal court cuisine dramas like “Jewel in the Palace,” and now I feel like I have rediscovered that same excitement! This is truly the blessing of the coronavirus. To all the cooking researchers and YouTubers who introduce healthy recipes on a daily basis, thank you so much! Although I am still a newcomer when it comes to discussing medicinal cooking, I want to continue learning and enjoying the fascinating world of medicinal cooking. So let’s enjoy a warm and healthy soup and get cozy today!” – Sachiko Yoshikawa
