Immigration Attorneys Help Migrants at Parkview

What We Did

On Monday evening, July 8, 2024, Parkview hosted a group of volunteer immigration attorneys in the church’s social hall to offer free legal consultations to migrants from Venezuela and Colombia. The event was organized by Parkview member Kishwer Vikaas and immigration attorney Patrick Gihana. Both are volunteering through the American Immigration Lawyers Association, NorCal chapter.
These migrants are currently being supported with social services through the nonprofit Sacramento ACT (Area Congregations Together). The group of eleven attorneys and one law student worked with a total of eight migrants and plan to work with others in the future.

Some Background on the Migrants

In June 2023, two groups of migrants, totaling 36 individuals, were sent by the state of Florida to Sacramento with the promise of jobs and services. The attorneys here hope to help the migrants apply for Victim of Crime Visas aka U Visas. Other migrants sent from Florida to Martha’s Vineyard have already successfully started applications for this process.
