Types of Prayer

ACTS, the acronym (not the book of the Bible), is used to represent four main types of prayer.   You can also incorporate ACTS in a single “complete” prayer.  ACTS goes like this:

ADORATION Prayers

  • Praise to God for who God is.
  • Acknowledging God’s greatness and wisdom in creation.

CONFESSION Prayers

  • We confess our state of sinfulness and brokenness.
  • Admitting we have a need for God.
  • We approach God in confession trusting in God’s mercy and forgiveness.

THANKSGIVING Prayers

  •  Thanking God for God’s favor on us, for life, bounty, and the gifts bestowed on us…
  • We can be thankful even for the little things, like meeting a friend, or having a good day.

SUPPLICATION Prayers (or petition prayer/ cry for mercy)

  •  Making petitions or requests to God.
  •  Asking for God’s help and intervention.
  • These are prayers for ourselves, others, and the world.
