June was Pride month, and the Sacramento Gay Men’s Chorus felt that they could not celebrate without acknowledging the deep hurt in this country. They wrote a beautiful statement (see below) followed by a song entitled, “How Could Anyone?” by Libby Roderick. The words are deeply powerful.
How can anyone ever tell you, you are less than beautiful? How can anyone ever tell you, you are less than whole? How could anyone fail to notice that your loving is a miracle? How deeply you’re connected to my soul.
These words are profound because they are true. As the scripture says,
Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by ]one Spirit so as to form one body . . .
1 Corinthians 12:12-13
We are all deeply connected to one another. We are all human and we are all connected to each other’s souls. When one part of the body hurts, we all hurt. It’s time for us to start mending and healing.
Statement by the Sacramento Gay Men’s Chorus
The Sacramento Gay Men’s Chorus stands with the Black community as they stand up against systemic injustice. As an organization, we recommit ourselves to our core value of diversity within our organization and community, and we strive to better educate ourselves on the experiences of people of color. We see you, we hear you, and we speak up alongside you as we continue our mission to foster pride and enhance lives, one song at time. Your experiences are valid, your hurt is real, and today we offer this song to you as a humble showing of solidarity. You are not alone. AAAAAA
