Pastoral Response to the Events of January 6, 2021

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

(Mark 12:28-34)

As the pastoral staff of Parkview Presbyterian Church, we are deeply saddened by the disturbing acts that took place yesterday at our nation’s Capitol, as well as here in Sacramento and in other cities around the country. What took place at our nation’s Capitol was an act of sedition and an assault on our democracy. We lament the violence that has taken place and pray for the healing of this nation. Many hearts are wounded today. May we share the light of God with one another.

When our Lord Jesus called us to be the Church, he called us to the way of Love. This is why our hearts are broken when we see fellow citizens and fellow children of God who share in one baptism using symbols of our Savior, such as the cross, in a demonstration fueled by hate. For many people who have grown up with no connection to the Church, these acts of hate are all they will see. This is a profound witness to the Church’s failure to live out the gospel in the United States.

It is undeniable that the heresy of Christian nationalism is at the heart of the movement expressed in our Capitol yesterday. Neither the Proud Boys nor any other hate group speaks on behalf of the Church. We worship the God of all creation, all peoples and nations. At Parkview, we affirm the Epiphany promise that God’s salvation in Jesus Christ is for all people, and we celebrate the gift of diversity in our congregation and city. In the name of Jesus, we reject the ideologies of hate, xenophobia, racism, and white supremacy that are so pervasive in our country.

We invite you to a time of reflection and prayer for the United States of America, for all in leadership, and for all churches across our nation. May we rise from the ashes and may that day be today. Lord, make it so.

Peace and Shalom,
Rev. Dr. Pamela Anderson
