On October 13, 2026, 21 participants gathered in Parkview’s social hall to learn Onore-Sho (“one’s own writing”). After a short presentation about Onore-Sho and its beginnings, the participants jumped “write” in to make their own version of the Japanese character for “enjoy.” Whereas traditional calligraphy has very strict rules concerning stroke order, direction, etc., the Onore-Sho style allows for personal expression. After the workshop, one of the master teachers painted a beautiful dragon in the Onore-Sho style, which was then presented to Parkview. Everyone left saying how much fun they had trying their hand at this free-form calligraphy. If you think you would like to give Onore-Sho a try, please look for announcements in the new year for another class at Parkview! “Meanwhile, if you’d like to know more about Onore-sho and practice, please talk to Miyo Uchida.”Many thanks to Miyo, who organized the class and is the first certified Onore-Sho teacher in the United States.
