Join us at church on Sunday, October 4, Worldwide Communion Sunday, for an Iu Mien Cultural Fair celebrating the history, culture and contributions of Sacramento’s Iu Mien community. In partnership with Iu Mien Community Services (IMCS), the event will offer an opportunity to learn about the Iu Mien, experience aspects of their culture, and support an organization serving local families. Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit IMCS. The event builds on the church’s successful Iu Mien embroidery exhibit in 2016.
The Iu Mien are an ethnic group with roots in China and Southeast Asia. Traditionally, many lived in mountain villages and relied on farming, hunting and fishing. During the Vietnam War era, Iu Mien people in Laos were drawn into the U.S.-supported “Secret War.” Many families experienced tremendous loss and displacement, eventually fleeing to refugee camps in Thailand before resettling in the United States. The first Iu Mien refugees arrived in the United States about 50 years ago. In May, approximately 5,000 Iu Mien from across the world gathered in Sacramento to commemorate 50 years of resettlement and community building. Today, Sacramento is home to the largest Iu Mien community in the United States.
Founded in 1994 by traditional Iu Mien community leaders, Iu Mien Community Services helps community members access resources while strengthening families and preserving cultural connections. IMCS programs include Healthy Village, which brings older adults together for exercise, social connection and community information; youth programs that provide safe spaces, mentoring and support; funeral assistance for families experiencing financial hardship; and individualized services such as translation, case management, Medi-Cal assistance and connections to community resources.
IMCS also recently launched Iu Mien Voices, a youth media leadership program funded through APIs RISE. The program coaches and mentors Asian and Pacific Islander youth in digital storytelling, helping young people develop media skills while sharing community stories and perspectives.
